Mold remediation in Portland that fixes the moisture first

Mold is a water problem. Kill every spore on the wall, leave the leak running, and it's back in a month. Portland's wet winters, crawlspaces and bathrooms give it plenty of chances. We find the water, remove what's growing, and prove the area is dry.

Mold

How we remove mold

Step 1

Contain it

Plastic containment goes up before anything is disturbed, so spores stay in the work area.

Step 2

Remove to clean material

Colonized drywall, insulation and trim come out and get bagged inside containment.

Step 3

Clean the framing

Sealed-filter vacuum, damp wipe, vacuum again. This is the step that does the work.

Step 4

Treat, dry and prove it

Antimicrobial on exposed framing, then the cavity is dried and measured before anything is closed up.

Where we find mold in Portland homes

Bathrooms
Behind showers with failed caulk or grout, and on ceilings with weak or missing exhaust fans.
Crawlspaces and basements
Wet soil, missing vapor barrier and poor ventilation keep joists and subfloors damp.
Attics and exterior walls
Roof leaks, blocked soffit vents and condensation behind siding.

If you find mold: do

  • Close the door to the room and keep it closed.
  • Stop the water if you know where it's coming from.
  • Keep anyone with asthma or allergies out of the room.
  • Take photos of what you can see.

Don't

  • Scrub, scrape or sand it.
  • Spray bleach on it.
  • Run the furnace or air conditioning if it's near a vent.
  • Paint over it.

Questions

Mold remediation: common questions

Does Oregon license mold remediation?

No. Oregon doesn't license mold work, so anyone can call themselves certified. What you can check is a Construction Contractors Board license. Ours is 258376.

Do I need a mold test?

Usually not when you can see it; visible mold has to come out either way. Testing makes sense when you smell it but can't find it, or need a report for a sale.

Why don't you use bleach?

Bleach can't reach into drywall or wood, the water in it feeds what's left, and it's a hazard in a closed bathroom.

Will the mold come back?

Not if the moisture is fixed. That's why every job starts with finding the water and ends with proving the area is dry.
